【STAFF'S RECOMMENDATION!】Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
Spring in Japan is known all over the world for its beautiful cherry blossoms. But a few weeks before the cherry blooms, beautiful plum blossoms are also in full bloom!
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a right place to go for you. Once a year, the plum garden of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine turns to pink and white with plum blossoms, and tells the coming of Spring in Kyoto.
The Kitano Tenmangu Shrine that was built in honor of Sugawara Michizane. It is the main shrine among over 12,000 tenmangu shrines in Japan. It is also famous as the god of academics. Therefore, it is worshiped as the patron of learning.
The plum garden contains some 1,500 trees of about 50 varieties. Geishas come to serve at the tea ceremony that is held as part of the plum blossom festival on Feb. 25 each year. The plum garden is open in the plum season of February and March.
Illumination in the plum garden will also be held on the weekend from 22nd of Feb. until 17th of March. The plum garden is open from early February to late March, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.Illumination is held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 22nd of Feb. until 17th of March. From the sunset until 8 p.m.Plum garden admission costs ¥800 for adults and half that for children and includes complimentary tea and Japanese confectionary.
